Tile Point Values — and Why

Alfred Mosher Butts, Scrabble's inventor, calculated letter values in the 1930s by analyzing the front pages of The New York Times. Common letters score low; rare letters score high. Here's the full breakdown for the English edition:

1 pt
A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T, R
The most frequent letters in English. Easy to use, low reward.
2 pts
D, G
Common consonants but slightly harder to fit into words.
3 pts
B, C, M, P
Useful consonants found less frequently than the 1-point group.
4 pts
F, H, V, W, Y
Less common letters. H and W appear often but are tricky to place.
5 pts
K
One of the most sought-after mid-value tiles. Makes KI, KA, and compound words.
8 pts
J, X
Rare letters. J enables JO, JAB, JINX. X enables XI, AX, OX on tight boards.
10 pts
Q, Z
The power tiles. Q is notoriously difficult (always needs U, except QI), while Z combos like ZAP and ZIT are game-changers.

The Spanish edition replaces some values: Ñ and X score 8 points, K, W and Z score 10. The blank tile (×2 in the bag) scores 0 but can represent any letter — a strategic weapon worth protecting.
